Summer Mystery of 2015

Thursday, July 09, 2015

We have two turtles we brought home 1 year ago for Colin's birthday and recently we upgraded their home to a 30 gallon tank. The tank has lots of live plants, real rocks, driftwood and big moss-balls. A week ago, a librarian gave us a big crayfish so we decided that this tank will make a great home for this new pet. The turtles and crayfish lived in harmony and everything was going great - they shared food, their living space and very neighborly to each other. Then one weekend (July 4th), we left to our "goo goo's" home in Livingston NJ for 2 nights and when we returned, the crayfish was no longer in the tank! We were all shocked and mystified ... where can it have gone? My dad searched the tank, looked under the rock and plants but it was nowhere to be found. What a mystery! I mean where oh where could it have gone? Mommy thought the two turtles must've ate it so we searched for hints such as its shell, legs or any remains to proof that theory but we found no evidence of that. Daddy concluded that it must have JUMPED out of the tank. We all thought that wasn't possible but without any other sound possibilities, we begun the search.
We searched under the couch, tables, chairs, beds and anything with an opening. No dice, no luck, no joy. We started sniffing everywhere because if it's been of the water for so long, it's body will smell of dry shrimp or something fishy. For the next few days, we continue our search but no sighting then tonight, my little bro reached between our red couch and small side table, felt something weird and there it was! Poor thing is dried up, smell fishy and absolutely dead. We gave it a proper burial and said good-bye to it. He was sooo young, we barely got a chance to get to know the fella. Our mom said we are no longer allowed to have a crayfish as a pet anymore. That is probably for the best because we will never forget this mystery of summer 2015!
